Louisville Flood

In early January 1937, the Ohio River began to flood. By the end of the month, more than seventy percent of Louisville, Kentucky was under water. Thousands of people were displaced from their homes, businesses were destroyed, and the geography of the city permanently shifted east, outside of the flood plain. In this photograph, taken by Margaret Bourke-White for Time magazine, a line of displaced people--adults and children, all of them Black--wait in line for food and dry clothing in front of an enormous billboard. In a terrible irony, the billboard depicts an idealized American family driving through a bucolic Midwestern scene beneath the words, "World's Highest Standard of Living." Over time, Bourke-White's photo has been used to represent the wealth disparity and precarious socio-economic conditions of the Great Depression.

Maxim-Cure a Feminist

In November 2003, Maxim Magazine, an international male-centric entertainment publication, put out an article in their "How To" section entitled "Cure a Feminist." It came complete with a 4-step process on how to turn an "unshaven, militant, protesting vegan into an actual girl!" It also contained a pictorial progression of girls going from clothed ("feminist") to half-naked ("actual girl"). The text gives advice to men about how to date or bed a "feminist," giving tips on how to ask interesting questions that would interest feminists. It also tells men how to "teach" the girl they are dating to be more "moderate than the combat-boot variety" of feminists by giving her some options to "think differently."

Nine West ad – “First Day of Kindergarten” shoes

This 2014 advertisement for Nine West shoes came from the company’s website, under the category “shoe occasions,” of which there were two: one for the “First Day of Kindergarten” and the other for “Starter Husband Hunting.” The ad reads: “First day of kindergarten: the bus arrives and so do the waterworks. Then it hits you. Mommy now has the weeks off. Wipe those happy-sad tears…we got a shoe for that.” A woman’s lower half is shown in a pink overcoat with high-heeled black shoes. She is holding a tissue, and there are crumpled tissues strewn about her feet as if she has been using them to wipe away tears from crying.

Nine West ad – “Starter Husband Hunting” shoes

This 2014 advertisement for Nine West shoes came from the company’s website, under the category “shoe occasions,” of which there were two: one for “Starter Husband Hunting” and the other for “First Day of Kindergarten.” The ad has a list of requirements for women when they go “starter husband hunting,” including needing a little black dress, smokey eyes, a wing-woman, and Nine West shoes, and shows a target with arrows in it, with a woman’s leg straddled across the target, wearing an animal print high heel. Her hand is also shown gripping a handful of arrows.
