Hoop Dreams” is a 1994 documentary directed by Steve James that was filmed over five years, following the lives of two African American high school students, William Gates and Arthur Agee, as they pursued their dreams of becoming professional basketball players. This scene introduces Earl Smith, an insurance executive who takes on the role of an unofficial talent scout on weekends. Earl notices Arthur Agee shortly after his graduation from elementary school and arranges a recruiting visit for him and his family to the high school where NBA star Isiah Thomas played. This visit is significant as it provides opportunity for the coaches at St. Joseph’s to observe Arthur’s basketball skills and potentially consider him for their team.

What are some of Arthur’s fears and who does he share them with?
What assurance or commitment does the coach make to Arthur Agee? What potential obstacles may get in the way of Arthur’s dreams and the coach’s commitment?
What are your dreams? How do you hope to achieve them? Are there things that might get in your way? Why?
