planters nuts

In this 2012 commercial for Planters Men’s Health Mixed Nuts, a trio of “manly” cartoon nuts perform a number of active feats — they drive fast, downhill ski, work out in the gym, and tenderly open a jar for a female nut who cannot do so herself. Co-sponsored by a popular magazine, the mix is described as “Men’s Health recommended” and “the manliest mix ever assembled”.

discussion

What would you say is the definition of a “manly man” in this commercial? What does the commercial do to establish this definition? What is already assumed by the audience?

What do you make of the collaboration between Planter’s Nuts and Men’s Health Magazine? Why do you think these two companies would come together to advertise this product?
