American History X

This scene is from the film “American History X” (1998), directed by Tony Kaye. The film discusses complex themes of racism, prejudice, and the repercussions of hatred. In this scene, the main character, Derek, addresses his disdain for what he calls “illegal immigration” in the United States. Derek attempts to convince a group of white people that they are the Americans that are being overlooked by the government as a result of resources going to immigrants in the United States. According to this perspective, immigration strains the nation’s resources and infrastructure and takes away resources from struggling Americans.

Who is Derek talking to? What is his tone?

In Derek’s view, who are the “decent, hard working Americans”? Why does he make that distinction?

What examples does Derek use to justify his feelings towards immigrants and minorities?

Have you heard these kinds of anti-immigrant ideas or feelings expressed by people you know or in other media you’ve seen? Why do you think these types of ideas may appeal to people?
