‘Moonlight’ Star, Andre Holland on Masculinity & Homosexuality in the Black Community

“Moonlight” is a 2016 film about a Black man struggling to understand his masculinity and queerness throughout his childhood, teen years, and adulthood. In this video by The Root, Andre Holland, who plays the protagonist’s close friend and romantic interest, explains the complicated role of toxic masculinity in the Black community that is reflected in the film. Specifically, he explains how the Black body has been treated as a symbol of strength and as a “powerful tool”, which can make it difficult for young, Black people to let their guards down or feel comfortable expressing vulnerability. “Moonlight” garnered numerous awards, including the 2017 Academy Award for Best Picture at the Oscars.
