That One Day, Miu Miu

Women’s Tales is an ongoing short film anthology series created by fashion brand Miu Miu. Aside from the stipulation that the films use Miu Miu clothing the all female directors are given free reign to create their films. Miu Miu has commissioned two films a year since 2011, one for their summer collection and one for the winter collection. “That One Day” came out in 2016 and was directed by Crystal Moselle. In it we see, Rachelle, a 17-year-old girl living outside of New York City, initially intimidated by casual, macho sexism at the skatepark, before she meets other skater girls, who she then bonds with. The film features real members of the skate crew “Skate Kitchen,” and was later turned into a movie and TV series.

discussion

What are some of the things the girls bond over?

Why do you think the short film focuses on loneliness for girls in particular?

Why do you think Miu Miu has funded the “Women’s Tales” series? And why do they hire only female filmmakers to create these stories?

Can you think of other sports or activities where women or men defy discrimination and successfully create community?
